Festivals in Dhanbad

Located in Jharkhand state of India, Dhanbad is a city known for its coal mines and major industrial establishments. Jharkhand state is mainly tribal dotting region and people worship nature with devotion here and thus some popular regional tribal festivals of this entire region belong to nature and cattle. Along with all major festivals of India are celebrated in the city with lot of enthusiasm and devotion.

Holi

Holi is one of the most popular festivals of Dhanbad which are celebrated by people of all castes and religions with pomp and gaiety. This festival is celebrated on Phalgun Purnima that usually comes in the month March as per Gregorian calendar. 

Like all other states of India, Holi is celebrated with fun and frolic in Dhanbad too. People of this city believe in legend of Holika and light bonfire on the eve of Holi without social discrimination followed with the play of color next day which is completely joyous and fun filled, accompanied with warm feelings of harmony.  

Diwali

Diwali is major festival that is celebrated in Dhanbad with pomp and show. Celebration of this festival starts with worship of God Dhanvantri on Dhanteras, two days before Diwali. People decorate houses with lights, flowers and oil lamps or diyas. 

Beautiful rangolis are designed and footprints of Maa Lakshmi are placed in the houses on this special occasion. Goddess Lakshi is worshiped on the festival of Diwali and tribal people of this region worship Maa Kali on Diwali with lot of devotion.  

Chhath Puja

People of Jharkhand worship nature and Chhath Puja is the festival that is devoted to Lord Sun. Chhath puja is celebrated with lot of devotion and harmony in Dhanbad. Chhath Puja is celebrated twice a year, once in month of Chaitra, which falls in March as per Gregorian calendar and second time in month of Kartik, which comes in November. 

God Sun is worshiped during this festival with devotion and people offer their prayers to Surya Dev to get their blessings.

Basant Panchami

Basant Panchami is another popular festival of Dhanbad which is celebrated with charm and vigor. Basant Panchami is celebrated in the breaking in of spring season with lot of fun and fervor. This festival is welcoming of spring season with traditional rites and rituals. 

Apart from devotional rituals, Kite flying is one of the most fun filled activities which are performed during Basant Panchami.

Ramnavami

Ramnavami is celebrated in Dhanbad with pomp and show. This festival is the celebration of birth of Lord Rama. People observe fast and offer prayer to Lord Rama on this festival. It is the major festival which marks the beginning time of wedding ceremonies in the region.  

Karma

Karma is one of the most popular tribal festivals of Dhanbad. Tribal people have faith in nature and thus they worship nature with lot of devotion. Karma is celebrated with observing fast for 24 hours and performing cultural performances keeping a branch of Sal tree in an open ground.

Sarhul

Sarhul is the prominent tribal festival of Dhanbad which is also devoted to Nature. Tribal people worship Sal tree which is said to be abode of Goddess Sarna. Tribal people believe that Goddess Sarna provides protection from the natural calamities. Besides, locals also worship Maa Sita, wife of Lord Ram. People of this region celebrate Sarhul with lot of fun and frolic.   

Dussehra

Dussehra is another famous festival of Dhanbad which is celebrated with fun and fervor. Duusehra is the festival which is celebrated for ten days without any discrimination of cast and creed.  This festival is celebrated to enjoy victory of Lord Ram over Ravana by the locals with lot of enthusiasm. Ramlila is also performed in various parts of the state. Along with people of Dhanbad also worship Goddess Durga with devotion during this festival.  

Vishwakarma Puja

Vishwakarma Puja is performed in Dhanbad with much fervor. This festival is devoted to the God Vishwakarma who is said to be born out of Samudra Manthan and famous as architect of the Gods. It is also believed that City of Dwarka, ruled by Lord Krishna and Maya Sabha of Pandavas were constructed by Lord Vishwakarma. People of this region celebrate Vishwakarma Puja with pomp and gaiety.

Durga Puja

Durga Puja is another popular festival of Dhanbad which is celebrated with lot of pomp and show in entire region. During this festival, Goddess Durga is worshiped with traditional rites and rituals. Along with Goddess Lakshmi and Saraswati, Lord Ganesha and Kartikeya are also worshiped during Durga Puja. 

During this festival, mandaps and pandals are decorated and idols of various deities are placed and worshiped in corners of the city. Besides, Mother Nature is also worshiped by the locals in form of various trees and plants which are believed to be sacred.

Eid

Eid is another famous festival which is celebrated with as much fervor as it is celebrated in other parts of the country. People greet each other and spread harmony without any discrimination of caste and creed with great pomp and show.
